while i’ve always enjoyed using audio gear to make records, i never intended or imaged that i’d be making it. until…
a few years ago, i had moved from nyc to the sticks and the pre-amp of my beloved home stereo system was in need of repair. not wanting to lug the unit into a shop in the city, i made several calls to local electronics repair shops in search of solution. it seemed like a fruitless task; everyone i spoke to either had no idea what they were talking about, didn’t deal with high-end audio, or thought a capacitor was a sex toy. that is, until i called brewster electronics…
there, i spoke to the owner, dave powers, who instantly sounded like a dude who knew exactly what he was talking about. not only did he and his engineer, albert langella, bring my pre-amp back to life, he – knowing my profession and music credits – asked if i would try out a new tube microphone pre-amp he was building based on a rare 1970’s transformer he came across in his shop.
slightly skeptical, but also curious, i said i would give it a test drive at my studio. expecting nothing, i split the signal from a quality vocal mic and compared the prototype to my favorite mic pre’s – which happen to be some of the best mic pre’s ever made. i just about shit my pants when i heard it; the rough and tumble prototype with hand-written parameter designations sounded as good or better as anything in my arsenal. warm yet defined, thick yet open, pristine or slightly harmonically enhanced, tonal and dimensional. stunned, i immediately called dave back and said, “WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS, I MUST BE INVOLVED!”
three years and several iterations later, we are ready to release the PRE-1 as Eusonia Audio’s first piece of professional, all-tube, analog recording devices. i couldn’t be more proud or excited. and my colleagues, who are some of the greatest producer/engineers to walk the planet, have been raving about it. i’d not put my company name on it unless it sounded transcendent and singular. welcome to the world, Eusonia Audio.

A few notes on the sound samples:
- They were recorded mostly at 24bit/96k in various studios in the New York area. No EQ or compression was used in the recordings.
- When we compared our pre to other top-of-the-line pre’s, we have withheld the name of our competitors out of respect for their brands. Those samples are labeled COMPETITOR.
- For the shootouts, we split the mic signal and went into our pre and our competitor’s pre. Everything was level matched on the input and output gain stages.
